What Is Chloroquine And How Does It Treat Malaria

Parasites that cause malaria typically enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. To prevent malaria, take Chloroquine once weekly on the same day each week, or as directed by doctor. Start this medication usually 1 to 2 weeks before you enter weeks after leaving the area, or as directed by your doctor. Both adults and children should take one dose of Chloroquine per week starting at least 1 week before traveling to the area where malaria transmission occurs.

Dosage

They should take one dose per week while there, and for 4 consecutive weeks after leaving. Side effects from chloroquine phosphate can occur include headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, upset stomach, stomach pain, skin rash or itching, hair loss, mood or mental changes this are the symptoms. Chloroquine made up of 7-chloro-4-quinoline by reacting 4,7-dichloroquinoline with 4-diethylamino-1-methybutylamine, which when heated at 250-270 c is decarboxylated, forming 7-chloro-4-hydroxyquinoline. Quinine is an antimalarial drug which is made from Cinchona bark. The mode of action of quinine is similar to chloroquine. Quinine alone or with other antimalarial medications is used to treat malaria cases especially in pregnant women near delivery. Chloroquine is still the drug of choice for sensitive malaria parasites although ACTs are used increasingly. Chloroquine is therefore used widely for O. vivax, p. malariae and P. Chloroquine brand name Aralen is an anti-malarial drug.

Similar medications

It is similar to hydroxychloroquine, and is useful in treating several forms of malaria as well as amebiasis that has spread outside of the intestines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chloroquine is considered safe to use during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant or might become pregnant while taking chloroquine. You will have to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy. Chloroquine and proguanil is available as an over the counter medicine from your pharmacy, so you don’t need to see a doctor for a prescription in order to be able to buy it. It is important that you make sure that it will protect you from the malaria parasites endemic to the region you are travelling to. Isaac Adewole, the minister of health, on Tuesday announced the ban on chloroquine and artemisinin monotherapy for the treatment of malaria. Doctors and nurses have been told that chloroquine is no longer useful and that it is wrong to prescribe artemisinin monotherapy.

How it works

Like most antimalarial agents, chloroquine is active against the erythrocytic stages of the parasite, other agents are necessary for the radical cure of P. vivax and P. ovale infections. Hydroxychloroquine is a 4-amino-quinoline antimalarian medication that is widely used to treat systemic lupus erthematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and related inflammatory and dermatological conditions. It is hydroxylated version of chloroquine, with a similar mechanism of action. Nerve cells have receptors that sniff out the presence of this histamine, and trigger an itch reaction. The itching reactions caused by chloroquine or cowhage don’t respond to anti-histamines. Chloroquine requires in the US. Chloroquine is widely available over the counter in much of central American as cloroquina or Aralen.

What to expect

Chloroquine induced pruritus has been reported in up to 50% of Black-skinned Africans[15-18]. This occurs 6-24 hours after administration and lasts for 4-5 days. Itching has been noted to be common in the palms and perineal region. Probably one of the more prevalent antimalarial drugs prescribed, due to its relative effectiveness and cheapness, doxycycline is a tetracycline compound derived from oxytetracycline. The tetracyclines were one of the earliest groups of antibiotics to be developed and are still widely in many types of infection.Other symptoms as blurred vision, pruritus, paresthesia, insomnia, etc. Primaquine is used after other medications have killed the malaria parasites living inside bed blood cells. Primaquina then kills the malaria parasites living in other body tissues.
